china_tourism_reality

China's own outbound tourism reporting groups destinations by region ("Europe", "Southeast Asia") — it does not publish an official per-country breakdown. This measures the real, precise per-country arrival counts each EU destination itself reports, verified live against Eurostat.

What China itself reports — real, but coarser

China Tourism Academy's official "China's Outbound Tourism Development Annual Report 2024" states outbound tourism reached 146 million person-trips in 2024, with Europe cited as a real but region-level destination share (behind Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and Northeast Asia) — no official per-EU-country breakdown is published in the source we could locate. This is a real granularity mismatch, not an error to paper over: DECLARED is regional, OBSERVED is exact per-country. We show both, never blend them into a single number.

Method

Direct real values, no derived ratio — arrivals as reported by each destination country's own tourism accommodation statistics, aggregated by Eurostat under a single harmonized methodology across all EU members (comparable across countries, unlike mixing national statistical offices' own individually-defined series).
